Bench theft shame of gardener

A missing memorial bench was found repainted and with its plaque removed in a garden half a mile away.

Alexander Wood, 42, who lived in the property, claimed he found it with the plaque a l ready mi ssing and thought it was abandoned.

Wood admitted stealing the bench by f inding in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.

Sentence was deferred to allow him to start saving up £200 to restore the bench to its original condition.
