Eilish: Pals proving I can be World beater

-

Eilish McColgan insists the success of her fellow Scots has her ready to go for broke in today’s 5000metres final .

The Dundonian, 26, will join Laura Muir in the final with her reputation at an all-time high following the personal best she set in the semis and fourth place spot at last month’s Diamond League in Monaco.

McColgan, whose mum Liz landed world gold in Tokyo in 1991, said: “I’ve always felt those girls were so much better than me. Confidence has been pretty low in my path. Maybe because of who my Mum is. I’ve always felt like I wasn’t quite at that level.

“But watching Laura, you think ‘why not?’ Callum Hawkins just came fourth in the marathon.

“Lynsey Sharp. Chris O’Hare. I grew up with them, so to watch them compete against the best in the world, I think ‘what’s different for me?’ Why can’t I do that?”
