1 dies in hit-run at neo-Nazi protest
One person was killed and several others injured after a car rammed anti-fascist protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia yesterday.
The driver of the car was in police custody last night. Video showed the vehicle ploughing into protesters marching peacefully – then reversing at speed.
The drama came after hours of tense stand-offs between white nationalists who had called a “Unite the Right” march and protesters including local church groups.
There had been sporadic clashes earlier in the day and on Friday night, when the right-wingers marched with torches and gave Nazi salutes.
The state governor declared a state of emergency as tensions escalated.
Far right groups are outraged by city council plans to remove a statue of Confederate Civil War general Robert E Lee.
Mayor Mike Signer called their rally “a cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism and intolerance”.
