-

A dad has died and his brother was seriously injured in a fire at a high-rise block of flats.

John McKechnie, 57, was discovered in his eighthf loor home after it was destroyed by the blaze.

His brother William was in a stable condition in intensive care in hospital yesterday.

Police have launched an investigation but said the fire did not appear to be have been started deliberately.

Emergency services were called to Standford Hall in Cambuslang, near Glasgow, on Friday at around 5.30pm.

John’s neighbours paid tribute to him yesterday.

Deborah Copson, who lives across the landing from John’s home, said: “I’m just so sad. It’s such a shame. He was a gentle soul. He would never do anyone a bad turn.”

Deborah was first alerted to the blaze when her fire alarm went off.

She saw smoke filling the landing when she opened her front door to investigate.

Deborah said: “We don’t know what’s happened. John did have a fire alarm. Every flat has one and the council check them regularly.

She wrote: “Just to let people know, the house fire in Cambuslang tonight was my brother John’s house.

“My ot her brot her William was also in the house. Our hearts are broken as we sadly lost our John.

“William is in hospital. Our fami ly is total ly devastated.”
