999 airlift after car smash on notorious road

A member of staff, who did not wish to be named, said: “One of my colleagues took a walk to the scene as we had no idea what was happening.

“They could see a lot of debris from the cars. The whole scene looked in quite a mess. The police were stopping cars there so that they could deal with a casualty on the road.

“We know there was an air ambulance on scene – it’s an awful incident.”

The road does not have motorway standard junctions and is notorious after a string of serious crashes over the years.

Pol ice, f ire services and paramedics all attended.

The road was closed in both directions as emergency workers helped the victims.

A pol ice spokesman said: “Emergency services were contacted at around 3.45pm.

“Three young children were in one of the vehicles – one is being taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries, aanother by ambulance while aanother is being assessed at the sscene.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue sspokeswom­an said crews had bbeen called to reports of a vehicle oon fire at the scene.

She added: “Three f i re appliances attended, one each from Kingussie, Aviemore and Newtonmore.

“Two vehicles were involved and one of these was on fire.

“This was extinguish­ed and there were no reports of any people trapped inside.”

She said the incident ended by 4.20pm although crews remained on site to ensure the area was safe.
