We can be ignorant, disrespectful and disregarding of the Lithuanians but trust me they’re fit, fast, strong and technical SAYS

Matt Phillips believes it’s time to do himself justice in dark blue after five years of flattering to deceive.

The West Brom winger is at the top of his game but knows only four Scotland caps in the five seasons and 43 internationals since his debut in a 5-1 defeat by the USA in 2012 isn’t a return that reflects his status.

And after missing the past three squads through injury the 26- year- old insists there’s a hot streak in him waiting to happen.

Phillips said: “Whether it’s been injuries or loss of form, the last f ive years have been stop-start.

“It didn’t exactly start well either, losing to the USA in the way we did.

“But that’s a long time ago now and it’s time to get back into the international scene more regularly.”

The hamstring problems of late last season kept Phillips out of the World Cup win over Slovenia in March and the 2-2 draw with England in June.

He sighed: “I wasn’t far away. I was doing a bit of work hoping to make the last game for my club.

“But I wasn’t ready and the last thing I wanted to do was come up for the England game half fit and let people down.

“Now I’m feeling good and hope to get the chance to show that.”

Phillips knows another two wins next weekend over Lithuania and Malta will see hopes of a play-off place climb even higher.

He said: “The boys made everyone proud against England. We need to take that into the next two games and get six points – then we can see where we are.”
