Tommy presses his case

-

Tommy Wright insists it was planning rather than luck that saw his St Johnstone side dismantle Celtic and take a Parkhead point.

Saints – the last side to beat Celtic in May last year – came within nine minutes of ending the Hoops’ invincible domestic run under Brendan Rodgers.

Their opener came when Steven MacLean seized on a blunder from Craig Gordon as Celts overplayed at the back.

The striker wrongly thought he was offside as he netted and Wright said: “Steven, being as honest as he is, says he was only messing about when he put it in.

“People say it’s fortuitous but it’s not because we work on how to press Celtic and put them under pressure.

“Other teams let them come out but it’s difficult. We tried to play as high up the pitch as we could and we did that for longer than we managed in last season’s games.

“I’m pleased with the point because they are an exceptional side and have proved that over a period of time.

“We deserved a point but so did they. To have 10 points out of 12, I’m absolutely delighted.”

Wright lost Murray Davidson to a sickening head knock in just the first minute.

And he revealed: “We think he is going to get out of hospital tonight so that is good news.

“It was quite serious at the time. He might have damaged some of his teeth as well but he lost consciousness and only regained it coming off the pitch.”
