DON VINCIBLES

McInnes vow as his heroes go clear at top

- Scott McDermott

Aberdeen went clear at the top of the Premiership – and Derek McInnes challenged his men to keep their 100 percent record going.

The Dons will go into the international break ahead of the pack

after making it four wins from four with a 4-3 victory over Partick Thistle.

It has been an impressive start to the campaign for McInnes’ men and they edged a thriller at Firhill thanks to Adam Rooney’s late header.

The Aberdeen boss insists it’s a huge result even at this stage of the season and he now wants his charges to be relentless.

McInnes said: “That felt like a big result today. It doesn’t matter if it’s the fourth game of the season or the 34th.

“You train hard all week to win a game and it’s no consolation if you play well and don’t. The players are getting the rewards for their efforts.

“It has been a good start for us and we’ve always been a team capable of going on winning runs.

“We said at the start we had five domestic games before the international break including a League Cup tie.

“We cha l lenged the players to win four in the league and get into the last eight of the cup and that’s where we are. So we’re really pleased and let’s see if we can keep it going now.”

McInnes was pleased with the win over the Jags and praised comeback striker Rooney for securing the points.

He said: “I’m delighted with the display. Adam has a lwa y s be e n a bi g contributor for us and none more so than today.”

Thist le gaf fer A lan Arch ib a ld wa s left frustrated by the officials after his side scored three but came away with nothing.

His side are still pointless in the Premiership and they weren’t helped by ref Bobby Madden and his assistants.

The whistler had a poor game and sidekick Graeme Stewart was responsible for awarding Aberdeen a penalty when Stuar t Bannigan nudged Ryan Christie in the box.

That got Aberdeen back in the game at 2-2 and afterwards Archibald, who had defender Niall Keown sent off at the end, said: “I don’t think Stuart has to go near him. Don’t give the ref a decision to make.

“But the ref didn’t make the decision, it was the l inesman. That’s what infuriates us. Nine times out of 10 they don’t do much. They take part when they want to.”
