Soap set for acid attack plotline
Emmerdale is set for a shock storyline about an acid attack.
The ITV soap has been speaking to victims in order to make the script as sensitive as possible in the wake of a string of vicious assaults.
A source said: “All soaps want to portray what is going on in the real world and Emmerdale is leading the way by broaching the troubling rise of acid attacks.
“Scriptwriters are in the early stages of drafting a plotline and they have been speaking to victims to get their point of view. It’s obviously a very sensitive subject and has to be portrayed in the right way.”
Emmerdale has tackled a string of sensitive storylines including Ashley Thomas ( John Middleton) battling dementia and the death of Holly Bar ton ( Sophie Powles) following a heroin overdose.
The soap has beaten rivals EastEnders and Coronation Street to a string of awards.
But in 2016, outraged Emmerd a l e v i ewe r s demanded an apology and threatened to boycott the show following the broadcast of an “appalling” joke about Cerebral Palsy.
Fans of the soap even called for scriptwriters to be sa cked over the cont r o v e r s i a l s cene involving characters Dan Spencer and Nicola King.
Planning for the new storyline comes as London has emerged as a hot spot for acid attacks.
A spokesman for the soap said: “We never comment on storyline speculation”.
