Wizard makes history
Super Scot John Higgins re-wrote the record books as he was crowned the new Indian Open champion.
The four- t ime world champion sparkled to beat Anthony McGill 5-1 in their all-Tartan tussle.
It was his 29th ranking title and Higgins has now leapf r o g g ed Ronn i e O’Sullivan and boyhood idol Steve Davis in the all-time list of triumphs.
The Wizard of Wishaw is second only to Scots legend Stephen Hendry who boasts 36 ranking crowns.
Higgins said: “It’s a real feather in the cap.
“To be brutally honest Ronnie will probably win a lot more titles in the coming years but it’s just a special occasion to go ahead of Steve Dav i s . That ’ s a massive achievement.
“He was my hero growing up. He won’t be adding to 28 because he’s retired so that’s something really special.
“Not many people can say they did a little bit more than the great Steve Davis.
“It was a dream to play Anthony in the final, it was great to have two Scottish players in a massive final.
“It hasn’t happened since 2011 so it’s great for Scottish snooker. Commiserations to Anthony because he did such a good job of defending the trophy.
“He’s a great player, a great friend and it was great to play him in such a big final.”
McGi l l was equal ly gracious in defeat and said: “I don’t mind coming second to John, he’s that good. I’m fine with it.
“John’s a better player than me but he’s also better than most players who have ever played.”
