Brendan Rodgers insists bringing Kolo Toure back to Celtic as the bridge between dugout and dressing room will work for everyone.

Describing the Ivorian as a technical assistant, the Hoops manager – who also had the 36- year- old at Liverpool – joked: “We missed his dancing!

“It was a route he wanted to go down.

“We gave him the summer to think about it as he was open to still playing.

“But he sees his future very much in coaching and for me he is a g reat ambassador for football.

“I’d title him a technical assistant.

“Or Banter Man! He’s a good guy to have around.

“He’s also involved with the Ivory Coast Olympic team so it ’ s a l l good experience for him.

“He’s had an amazing career as a footballer and it’s a huge benefit for Celtic to have someone like him at the club.

“He has a link to the chang ing room, he’s respected and the club will get the benefit of that.” Brendan Rodgers admits European footba l l is becoming more divided into the haves and have-nots.

But he insists the game needs both ends to survive.

He said: “People and TV will still pay to see the best players. But will interest dwindle if there are only five big clubs winning?

“The difference in terms of money now is clear.

“My aim is to maintain the mentality where it is not just good enough to qualify but you have somehow go to compete at that level.

“But it could be on the road to that divide.”

Celtic have now lost 24 of their past 31 group games in the Champions League.

But Rodgers insists there are various ways to measure progress. He said: “You have to see the setbacks you get as motivating factors to improve and develop.

“Can you imagine the experience Tony Ralston got out of that? He and Kieran Tierney were up against the two most expensive players in the world but did well.

“So there will be success for us in different ways in this competition.”
