Forfar falter as Ayr fire in five

Ayr United boss Ian McCall hailed his side’s firepower after they ran riot against bottom of the league Forfar Athletic.

Michael Moffat opened the scoring for the away side in 15 minutes before helping himself to a hat-trick with two further goals in the second half.

Superb efforts from Lawrence Shankland in 52 minutes and sub Craig Moore five minutes from time helped cement the thumping win for second-placed

United. McCall said: “In the second half we played some fabulous football and could have scored a wee bit more.

“We scored some great goals. We have a lot of firepower. “

Disappoint­ed Forfar boss Jim Weir said: “There wasn’t much in the game at half time but after their second goal it was just men against boys at times.”

Stranraer boss Stevie Farrell admitted ref Gavin Ross had no option but to call it quits as Stair Park was hit by a deluge.

Lewis Vaughan’s early freekick was cancelled out by Scott Agnew before Ross abandoned the match after 39 minutes.

Ross said: “When we started the pitch was good but it rained

until we stopped and was no longer safe for the players.”

Farrell agreed and said: “The managers are frustrated, the players are frustrated, the fans are frustrated, but it was becoming a bit farcical.”

Raith boss Barry Smith said: “It was the right decision but probably at the wrong time.”

Arbroath gaffer Dick Campbell says Ryan McCord saved the best till last with a goal fit for the Champions League.

McCord and Danny Denholm netted a double each with Bobby Linn, Gavin Swankie and Kane Hester hitting singles to wipe out Ryan Conroy’s penalty opener.

Campbell was delighted with

his team but singled out McCord for a sublime chip that rounded off a great day for the Angus side.

Campbell said: “McCord’s second goal was stunning. If that had been scored in the Champions League it would be goal of the tournament.

“Only gifted players can score a goal like that.”
