SCOTLAND REMEMBERS CASUALTIES OF WAR

- EDINBURGH Garden of Remembrance Niki Tennant

Scotland fell silent yesterday as millions remembered the country’s fallen heroes.

Remembrance services were held across the country to mark 99 years since the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.

In Edinburgh, members of the Armed Forces and veterans held a two- minute silence in the Garden of Remembrance at an event organised by Legion Scotland, while in Glasgow the Lord Provost attended a service in George Square.

Veterans Minister Keith Brown, who laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Scotland at the cenotaph at Memorial Park in Bridge of Allan, near Stirling, cal led for people to use Remembrance Sunday to commit themselves to ensuring future generations are “spared the horrors of war”.

He said: “A century on from the devastation of the First World War, which left barely a single family untouched by tragedy and loss, it remains as important as ever that we come together across Scotland to commemorate those lost in all conflicts, past and present.”

In London, Big Ben chimed for the f irst time since August, having been silent due to repair work, as a tribute to those who lost their lives. Further services will be held today, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon laying a wreath at the Stone of Remembrance in Edinburgh.

Landmarks across Scotland are being lit up red as part of this year’s Scottish Poppy Appeal – including the Kelpies in Falkirk, the Titan Crane in Clydebank, Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, Edinburgh Castle and the tower at Edinburgh Airport.
