Viewers dig deep to raise record £50.1million for Children in Need

Big- hearted viewers donated a whopping £50.1million to Children in Need – the highest

on-the-night total yet.

The huge sum included £ 4,143,992 raised by Scots. People dug deep during the five-hour extravagan­za on Friday – which saw celebs flock to the stage alongside hosts including Graham Norton and Mel Giedroyc. The cash – up more than £ 5million on last year – will benefit dozens of kids’ charities across the world. The highlight of BBC Scotland’s output was a mash-up sketch of River City and Scots Squad starring Shieldinch favourite Stephen Purdon and cop comedy actor Darren Connell.

Funnyman Peter Kay also delighted Car Share fans on the night by announcing there will be two more episodes of his hit show, having previously said characters John Redmond and Kayleigh Kitson wouldn’t be returning.

Viewers saw Blue Peter presenters perform as part of a Strictly Come Dancing special.

Mark Curry trounced Konnie Huq and Anthea Turner to win the Pudsey Glitterbal­l. The cast of EastEnders belted out West End hits, while the Countryfil­e team performed country hits.

Fans called for The Weakest Link to return to the box full-time after Anne Robinson grilled stars for a celeb special.

Holby City and Strictly star Chizzy Akudolu walked away with the £15,000 cash prize for her chosen charity.
