I want to win more like Stein

-

BRENDAN RODGERS insists he wants to add another layer to his Celtic legacy this afternoon by following in Jock Stein’s footsteps again.

The Celtic boss became only the third boss in Hoops history to win a treble last season, matching Stein and Martin O’Neill.

Today he wants to be the first to win four domestic trophies on the bounce since the legendary European Cup-winning manager last did it 47 years ago.

Rodgers said: “My job at Celtic is to add to the legacy so when the time comes for me to pass the ball to someone else, we have really added to the cycle. What we have been working on is a real dominant cycle where we play football that brings joy to the supporters.

“When it gets passed on we hope this is looked back on as a really successful period. In this first 17 months we have done that and the ambition for us is to maintain that and keep focused on winning.”

Rodgers has yet to lose a domestic fixture in his tenure – but he insists he doesn’t lose sleep fearing the day their 64-game run comes to an end.

He said: “I don’t think so much of the record stopping as much as the game in front of me. If you worry too much about the other stuff you’d never come out your room.

“Every manager will tell you that they plan to win. And you plan what you will do if something needs to change in the game.

“You do your very best and prepare your team. You know that you will lose. I said it last year – it will happen at some point.

“We’ll be ready to press the reset button and go again.”

Celtic have yet to face Motherwell this season but last season’s comefrom-behind 4-3 win at Fir Park was probably as close as they’ve come to defeat under Rodgers.

He said: “We’ve had a number of games that have been close but when you are 2- 0 down it poses a different question.

“We had to do something about it and we were brilliant in the second half. At 2- 0 down you have to stay calm and find the solution.”
