Johnson in talks over Iraq jail mum

Boris Johnson had “frank” talks in Iran yesterday as jailed mum Nazanin ZaghariRat­cliffe awaited a new court appearance.

The Foreign Secretary – who was accused of putting Nazanin at risk with comments about her case – discussed her situation in his meeting with foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Repor ts suggest the I ra n ian- Br i t i sh dua l national, who was convicted of trying to overthrow the Tehran regime, is due to appear in court again today.

There have been threats that her five-year sentence could be doubled af ter Johnson told MPs she was in Iran to train journalist­s when she was detained last year.

She insists she was in the country for a holiday to show her baby daughter Gabriella to her parents.

Aid worker Nazanin’s husband, Richard Ratcliffe, from London, said yesterday Johnson would be trying to visit his wife.

But the Iranian regime do not recognise her dual citizenshi­p so are unlikely to agree to a visit.

A For e i g n Of f i c e spokesman sa id that Johnson had raised the case of a number of dua l nationals detained in Iran during a “constructi­ve” meeting on a range of topics.

He said: “During two hours of frank talks, they agreed to work together to make progress on a number of the most important bilateral and regional security issues.”
