FRINGE MEN SHINE FOR CLARETS

-

Sean Dyche praised Burnley fringe men Scott Arfield and Kevin Long after the pair helped secure a 1- 0 win over Watford at Turf Moor.

Former Falkirk midfielder Arfield came in for the stricken Robbie Brady and struck the clincher while Long saw his f irst league action of the season, replacing Ben Mee.

The result keeps the Clarets seventh and Dyche said: “It was a great finish from Scott, really calm and composed.

“I’m pleased for him because it’s hard coming in when you’re not playing regularly.

“He’s worked so hard and delivered a fine performance. As the game grew he was finding better passes.”

Elsewhere, an Ayoze Perez own goal handed Leicester a 3-2 win at Newcastle.

The Spaniard poked the ball into his own net as he tried to prevent Shinji Okazaki scoring.

Joselu had put the home team ahead with a close-range finish in four minutes only for Riyad Mahrez to fire into the top corner from 25 yards.

Demarai Gray put City in front after the break with a shot that found the net via a deflection off Florian Lejeune before Dwight Gayle levelled matters with a shot that came off Harry Maguire.

However, City had the final say via the boot of Perez.

Christian Benteke missed a late penalty as Crystal Palace were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth.

The away side had taken the lead through Jermain Defoe but Palace hit back with two goals in three minutes.

Luka Milivojevic scored a penalty awarded for a foul on Wilfried Zaha before Scott Dann netted from a Yohan Cabaye bal l across goal .

Defoe then lashed in a sweet half-volley to send the teams in even at the break.

Palace finished the stronger but Benteke squandered his chance from 12 yards to leave his side bottom.

That allowed Swansea to leapfrog Palace courtesy of Wilfried Bony in their 1- 0 win at home to West Brom.

Huddersfield record signing Steve Mounie returned to form with a double in their 2- 0 win at home to Brighton.

The well-deserved win ends the Terriers’ dismal run of four consecutive defeats.
