Petrie’s feeling peachy
Montrose boss Stewart Petrie saw his side power back to top spot with a 3-0 win over Berwick but admits their league place isn’t important right now.
The Gable Endies put in a stunning f irst- half display with Gary Fraser bagging a double and Chris Templeman also netting.
It took them back above Peterhead – whose match with Clyde was called off due to a frozen pitch – in the table.
And Petrie said: “Our first half was outstanding and as good as we have played since I came to this club.
“Berwick changed things at the break and there wasn’t much between us in the second half. It was hard to repeat the first-half performance but we were happy not to concede.
“League position does not matter at this stage but I am delighted with three more points at home.”
Berwick boss Robbie Horn said: “The game was finished at half time.”
Montrose took the lead in two minutes when Fraser controlled the ball on his chest and drove home.
It was 2- 0 in 19 minutes. Martyn Fotheringham had a drive parried and Templeman fired the rebound into the net.
Rampant Montrose made it three in 28 minutes when Fraser headed home an Iain Campbell corner.
Jordan Allan’s last- gasp header earned Elgin a 1-1 draw and sickened Edinburgh player assistant Craig Beattie.
The former Scotland striker turned makeshift centre-back helped to frustrate Elgin and looked like setting up their first win since mid-August.
Far id El Alag u i gave Edinburgh a 51st-minute lead but right at the death Allan headed home a corner for a share of the spoils.
Beattie said: “We came for a win and to lose an equaliser to a set-piece is so frustrating.”
Meanwhile, Blair Henderson notched a hat-trick as Annan beat Stenhousemuir 3-1.
Colin McMenamin had put the Warriors in front in 69 minutes but Henderson levelled a minute later before going on to net two more.
Stirling against Cowdenbeath was another game that fell to the freezing weather conditions.
