We’re still Red close

Park on Friday before his team’s 1- 0 win over Dundee – McInnes hopes the relationship he has with supporters is now more solid than ever.

He said: “I can’t change what some people think but none of this was my doing. I know what was right and I’ve always worked hard for Aberdeen. I’ve always given my club everything.

“My job is to get a winning team on the pitch so after recent results (two defeats to Rangers), I could have understood concerns.

“But what was clear from Friday, even from the warmup, was that supporters were there with an intent to show support to everybody.

“There wa s a rea l solidarity there. We had 2500 at Dens on a bitterly cold night. And it was nice to see the players celebrate with them because there has always been a really strong connection between us and the support.

“We’ve had it for fourand- a- half years and it’s important that it continues.”

McInnes said of last week’s dramatic events: “There was a decision to be made. I took my time to consider everything, which is normal practice when an opportunity comes along.

“I was awa re that supporters were concerned because they’ve been used to seeing their team win then there was a couple of poor performances. Rangers played very well against us but we weren’t anywhere near our level.

“Expectations have been so high so when the team isn’t winning, there has to be a reason for it. But I knew what was happening – and nothing changed from us, my staff.

“So I was pleased to get back to something a bit more like normality on Friday night.”
