HEAD v HEART

advances to s tay at Pittodrie. Having grown up a Gers fan and spending five years with the club as a player, McInnes admits there was an emotional pull.

But he’s convinced he has made the right call.

McInnes said: “I made the decision with my head rather than my heart. I think that’s clear. It preyed on my mind that it might be my one and only chance but you’ve got to try and make an educated decision.

“I grew up as a Rangers supporter, I played for the club. It’s clear the affinity I have with the club.

“There was a lot to consider. My family still live in the west of Glasgow.

“Like in any walk of life, when opportunities come along you weigh it up. But I work for Aberdeen and my career is important to me.

“And I wasn’t prepared to rip up a contract and walk away from strong relationships that I’ve forged for many years.

“Hopefully we can have some good t imes at Aberdeen and if there are opportunities in the future, wherever, I would look at them again. But for now it’s important that the message is clear. And that is that we try to knuckle down and get on with the job at Aberdeen.

“Am I relieved that it has come to a conclusion? It was unusual to say the least.

“People assumed a lot more than me and about the situation than was true. When the official approach came, there was an answer in less than 48 hours.”
