EU HAVE GOT TO TELL THE TRUTH, GOVE

BREXITEER BLASTED OVER TERMS OF DEAL

- Mark Aitken ■ Poltical Editor

Chie f Brex i t eer Michael Gove has been accused of misleading voters by claiming they can tear up a deal with Europe at the next General Election.

The Tory minister insisted the electorate will be able to force changes to Brexit by voting for a government that would “diverge” from a deal.

But opposition politicians warn that 2022, the likely date of the next General Election, would be too late to change the agreement.

Gove, who was a prominent Leave campaigner, wrote in the Daily Telegraph: “The Brit ish people wi l l be in control. If the British people dislike the agreement that we have negotiated with the EU, the agreement will allow a future government to diverge.”

But Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable said: “Michael Gove is trying to do the opposite of what he says – he wants to strip the British people of control of this process.

“As polling has shown, there is a growing consensus suppor t ing the Liberal Democrat policy for the public to have a vote on the terms of the dea l , but ex t reme Brexiteers do not want to take this risk in the l ight of increasing economic and political evidence that Brexit will be seriously damaging to the UK.

“Gove wants to deny us the right to block a poor deal. If, by the time of a 2022 General Election, the Government have negotiated and implemented a bad deal, we would not have the option of returning to the EU on the terms we currently enjoy with our closest, biggest and most important trading partner.

“The only way to give people control is for a vote on the terms of the deal, with the option of an exit from Brexit.”

Britain agreed a divorce bill of up to £ 39mi l l ion with Brussels on Friday – £1400 for every household in the UK.

The deal will protect the rights of three million EU nationals living in the UK and one million UK nationals in the EU and it means no hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
