Millar insists business as usual for his Saints

- Gordon Waddell

Chris Millar knows the measure of St Johnstone’s players as pros doesn’t come with wins at Ibrox or points at Celtic Park.

It comes with grinding games out at Dingwall after you’ve done all that.

Saints aim to win their fourth straight away game on Wednesday night and their fifth straight win in the Staggies’ Highland home.

Millar said: “It’s a hard place to go, a long commute, not the most glamorous journey, a night game, two days after Christmas – all the pitfalls are there for you to slip up.

“But we won’t, we’ll have the football heads on, not the festive heads. We can switch off in January.

“These are the games, difficult places at difficult times, which get you to the places you want to be.

“It’s great winning at Ibrox for the first time in 40-odd years and taking points off Celtic, they’re big games, big crowds, you’re fired up, but going to Ross County, you have to dig in.”

Millar ran the show last weekend against Rangers in just his third start of the season for Tommy Wright.

But he’s looking to cement Saints’ place in the top six after what was a difficult first half of the season.

He said: “It’s all about perception. We’ve not played in the style we have in recent years, we’ve ground out more games but if we win on Wednesday night we’ll be ahead of the points tally we had this time last year, with a game in hand.

“We want to start a run where we challenge again for the top six and set us ourselves up for January.

“Right now, going by the indicators from seasons past, we’re right there or thereabouts to match what we usually do. That can’t be a bad thing.”
