Paul Quinn insists Dundee United won’t let defeat to title rivals St Mirren derail their push for the Premiership.

The Terrors slipped five points behind table-topping Buddies following Friday night’s 2-0 defeat at Greenhill Road.

That prompted boss Csaba Laszlo to brand his side’s secondhalf performance in Paisley as the worst he had seen.

Quinn admits United have to deal with the pressure but insists their target remains automatic promotion to the top flight.

The 32-year-old defender said: “It was a disappointing result.

“After we conceded the opener St Mirren got on top of us and it’s disappointing we didn’t continue to cause them problems.

“It ended up a comfortable win for them. But nothing has changed since the first day of the season – we want to win the title – it has always been our aim.

“We’re the favourites and everyone says we’re the so-called biggest club but we need to be able to cope with that and not be burdened by it.

“We have a game in hand against Queen of the South. It’s annoying because we should have been four or five up when it was abandoned at half-time the other week.

“Now we have to go back down there and do it all over again – but that’s football.”

A double from Celtic-bound Lewis Morgan ensured a first defeat in six games for United and Quinn reckons the St Mirren kid is a special talent.

He said: “Lewis is a fantastic footballer and he won the game for Saints but I believe we have four or five players in the same bracket – guys who are potential game-changers.

“We’re full of confidence and will show that in our next game.”

Meanwhile, St Mirren gaffer Jack Ross is taking nothing for granted as their lead at the top could be wiped out in a week.

The Buddi e s t r avel to Cappielow for the Renfrewshire derby with Morton on Tuesday before hosting Inverness next weekend. Ross said: “It can change so quickly in this division because the games come round so quickly and we have a difficult fixture on Tuesday.

“Neither United or us have had a sustained spell at the top. But our aim was to get through the festive period in this position and we’re making a good fist of it.”
