Dustin on the charge

-

Dustin Johnson reminded fans why he’s ranked the world’s top golfer as he turned on the style at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The American shot a five-under 65 to move within one stroke of second-round leaders Marc Leishman(69) and Brian Harman (68).

And he was only deprived of a share of the lead when Leishman and Harman both birdied the par-five 18th to move to a 10-under 136 total.

Johnson, who won this title in 2013, said: “I got off to a rough start and bogeyed three and four from the middle of the fairway.

“I was hitting some good shots but didn’t score very well. Birdies at the sixth, eighth and ninth got me back in the rhythm and I played a solid back nine.”

Johnson has not made many headlines since a fall knocked him out of the Masters la st Apr i l , a tournament he would have started as hot favourite c om i n g off three consecutive victories.

But he has done enough to stay top of the world rankings for close to a year.

Aussie Leishman had two victories last season and the easygoing 34-year- old has his eye on bigger and better things for 2018.

He said: “It was tough playing in the wind so I was really happy with four birdies and no bogeys.

“You play to win. Having a year like I had last year, confidence is high. I feel like when I’m in this position I need to f inish it off but there’s a lot of golf to play.”

American Harman used an unlikely birdie at the par-five 15th to jump into a share of the lead.

After f luffing his third shot, an uphill pitch that failed to reach the green and rolled back nearly to his feet, he pitched in from 80 feet.

Colombia’s Jhonattan Vegas (70) is tied for fourth on eight under alongside Americans Pat Perez and Chrios Stroud (both 66)
