Ministers urged to bail out Carillion

- Political Editor

Government ministers were yesterday urged to save construction company Carillion from collapse.

The crisis-hit firm, who have £1.5billion worth of debt, are key players in projects such as the new Aberdeen bypass and the Edinburgh Waverley railway station revamp.

Unite Scotland’s John Clark said: “Every Carillion worker is now in fear of their future. Do Theresa May and her Government have enough resolve to rescue Carillion in the way that the banks were rescued all those years ago?”

Clark said there had been “grave concerns” about the firm, who employ 20,000 in the UK, for some time.

He said: “So what happens if Carillion can’t get out of trouble? Massive structure projects like the Aberdeen bypass are obviously a problem, but so too are individual jobs.”

Labour shadow Cabinet Office minister Jon Trickett said: “Labour urge the Government to stand ready to intervene and bring these crucial publ ic - sector contracts back in-house in order to protect Carillion’s employees, pension holders and British taxpayers.”

But Lib Dem leader Vince Cable insisted there should be no Government bailout.

The ex-business secretary said: “The shareholders and creditors – the big banks – have to take a hit. They can’t just offload all the losses on to the taxpayer.”
