Archie: Miller showed the heart of a Lyon with big goal

-

Legendary football broadcaster Archie MacPherson vividly recalled commentating on Liam Miller’s memorable Champions League goal for Celtic against Lyon in 2003.

He said: “I remember my commentary on that goal well. Celtic were in the lead but they couldn’t kill offoffLyonLyon, try as they could.

“If you listen to the commentary now, you can hear the frustration in my voice because you see it so often against continental teams where they soak up so much pressure then suddenly there’s a breakaway and they nick a result.

“There was nothing sensational about Miller coming on that night.

“I’d been impressed by him because he’d previously made a breakthrough into a top Celtic team.

“They had strength, pace and Henrikand Henrik Larsson up front so it was always going to be difficult for a youngster to fit into that team but Miller managed it with aplomb.

“He was a dapper player. He only scored six goals for Celtic as I can recollect but the one that really mattered was that night against Lyon because Celtic couldn’t kill that team off.

“It sounds cliched but it is tragic to hear news of a young man dying at 36. It’s awful. I’ve had cancer. But there are some cancers you can’t beat and sadly Liam has come up against one that could not be thwarted.”
