SOFT SQUAD

Cop comedy team behind Irish border mockumentary

-

The series takes a pop at possible political absurdities, including a fourway split of power between Brussels, Westminster, Dublin and Stormont.

Marie McDonald, a producer for BBC Northern Ireland, said: “I grew up in Moville, County Donegal, and there was the frustration over being searched by customs when you came back across with your shopping.

“We look at different laws on different sides and at rural land where farmers need to be very careful to ensure their UK sheep stay in the UK, and the same with the fish – how can we tell if they’re from the European or British side of the river?

“We’re having a laugh with some topics which are serious issues. We’re all united here now, saying please don’t put a hard border back into the land.”

For Glasgow-based Northern Irish comedian Elaine Malcolmson, who grew up in Banbridge, Brexit has become fertile comedy territory.

She said: “It seems ridiculous that there’s something coming back which needs patrolled and the programme is point i ng out the ridiculousness of that in everyday life.”
