Levein froze caps without telling me
Mark Wilson pulled out of a Scotland squad on the advice of medics then never got another cap.
And the former Dundee United and Celtic defender says he’s still not had a call from ex-national team gaffer Craig Levein to explain why.
Wilson said: “I regret not winning more caps but it was outwith my control.
“When I was playing well for Celtic I was worthy of a call-up. I had my best spell under Neil Lennon in 2010/11 and eventually got a call-up from Levein.
“I didn’t feature too much and got just one cap. But my international career finished on a sour note.
“My knee was done at the end of that season and I was being told by doctors to cut down. Scotland were due to play in the Nations Cup at the end of the season so I called Craig and told him I’d been advised to rest.
“I had played a lot of games so I had to pull out of the squad. It was genuine, I desperately wanted to play.
“Craig was great on the phone, wished me all the best and said he’d see me at the next international break.
“I started the next season for Celtic, played in the Europa League against the likes of Atletico Madrid – but never got a look-in.
“From that day, Craig has never spoken to me. I wasn’t called up again and he never picked up the phone.”
Wilson also believes his club career was curtailed due by injury. He said: “That’s my biggest regret, I wish I’d have been fit enough to play 200 or 300 times for Celtic.”
