Present hunters stuck in gridlock

-

A rush for Mother’s Day presents yesterday sparked traffic chaos at a shopping centre.

Some drivers had to wait up to three hours to get out of car parks at Glasgow’s Silverburn mall.

Furious shopper Sharon Kaye was among those stuck. Her husband Richard, 57, from Glasgow, said: “She is quite stressed out.

“It took just over three hours for her to get home and it’s on our doorstep.

“It is very badly managed. They need to sort it out.”

Scott Widdowson posted on Twitter: “Si lverburn multi-storey car park is the laughing stock of Glasgow. An hour later I’m still on the same floor.”

It’s not the f irst time Silverburn shoppers have faced gridlock.

Late last year, some were delayed for up to five hours after a festive visit by the Coca- Cola truck.

A Silverburn insider blamed the mayhem on a Mother’s Day rush for gifts.

The source added: “The place was rammed and everyone left for home at 4pm, causing a bottleneck.

“Another problem is that we are not in control of the traffic light system so we cannot react when there is an issue like this.”

Silverburn apologised and a spokesman added: “Mother’s Day weekend is one of our busiest. In spite of increased staffing levels, there were challenges.

“We are continuing to work with the council to improve arterial roads and traffic light systems to avoid situations like these.”
