This is big one for Bren

Brendan Rodgers agrees with Graeme Souness that the Old Firm derby is the biggest in the world.

The former Rangers boss reiterated his belief that Glasgow clashes can’t be beaten in terms of passion and atmosphere.

And despite being part of the Merseyside equivalent as Liverpool gaffer, as well as white-hot games against Manchester United, Rodgers insists Souey is right.

He claims the history and politics behind the Old Firm match make it unique.

Rodgers said: “There’s no doubt that it’s the biggest game out there.

“When I think back to Swansea City v Cardiff City when I was there, that’s a real rivalry. Then I was part of Liverpool v Man United and Liverpool v Everton. Those are big games.

“But there’s a difference with this one. It’s historical, political, football, you name it – it’s all in there. And there’s that extra sense of knowing what it means.

“They are wonderful occasions. They’re not always the best games but thankfully for us in the majority of them we’ve played well and got a result.”

Rodgers refuses to get involved in the madness that surrounds the Old Firm fixture. He lives in Glasgow and knows that he could be a target for abuse.

But the Northern Irishman says he has escaped the flak so far.

He said: “I’ve never had any hassle going to Ibrox. It has been passionate, intense and of course you get the odd comment.

“However, I’ve never had any issue with the Rangers supporters and I’ve met enough of them.

“They are passionate people. They want their team to do really well, they expect it.

“I’m just the opposition manager. You get a bit of stick but it’s OK.”
