DON’T CEL MURTS SHORT

Rodgers tells Gers: Give him job or you’ll lose him

- Scott McDermott

Brendan Rodgers reckons the Rangers board should give Graeme Murty a long-term deal as Ibrox gaffer – or risk losing him altogether. On the eve of today’s Old Firm clash,

the Celtic boss insists the Gers’ stand-in has done enough to get the gig beyond this season.

And Rodgers believes if their Glasgow rivals DON’T make Murty permanent gaffer this summer he’d find it hard to return to his role as Under-20s coach.

Rodgers said: “Graeme has done enough to get the job long-term.

“It’s never easy in your first management job, especially one of that scale. The minute he got it until the end of the season he’s been able to do it the way he wants to.

“And if he doesn’t get it, he’d find it very difficult to go back to being an U20s coach. Of course, if you’re out of work and you have to earn money you’d do it.

“But he now probably has a really good chance of getting the job and that would allow Graeme to build going forward.”

Rodgers experienced a similar scenario at Chelsea back in 2007.

After being involved at first-team level, he caught the bug and soon became a boss himself.

He said: “When Jose Mourinho got the sack, I was brought in with the first-team at Chelsea.

“I enjoyed the intensity and pressure of it.

“It was no coincidence that not long after that I became a manager.”
