blizzard heroes get gift.. of £1.52

- Mark Aitken

Tesco workers at a distribution centre who defied severe snow storms to turn up for their shifts have been rewarded with a lunch voucher – for £1.52.

The offer has been criticised by staff who ignored pleas from Police Scotland and the Scottish Government to stay at home during the weather warnings.

One member of staff said: “The meal voucher is being seen as absolutely derisory and insulting.”

Two paramedics have been hailed heroes after delivering a baby in their ambulance at the height of the snow storms.

Colin Laidlaw and Sara Blacklock battled through two feet of snow to reach mum-to-be Muriel Masson, 37, at her remote home in the Yarrow Valley in the Borders.

But baby Aidan decided to make his arrival on the way to the Borders General Hospital in the middle of the red weather warning.

Colin, 48, said: “The challenge was all about getting there in the snow and it was a very difficult journey.

“When we arrived, Muriel was heavier into labour than we expected.

“And five miles into the journey to the hospital, little Aidan decided to introduce himself.

“It was mum who obviously did most of the work but Sara and I were just delighted with the outcome.”

Sara, 50, added: “It was quite an unnerving experience getting to Muriel and we knew there was potential for a few things to go wrong.

“But we simply worked together and did our best to reassure Muriel.

“We were thrilled that mum and baby were fine.”

Muriel said: “It was a huge relief when the ambulance arrived at my home. And I couldn’t have been in better hands.”
