It’s not quite fit for a king but cosy pub gets our royal seal of approval

-

Until the 17th century, Dunfermline was the capital city of Scotland.

And in The Seven Kings, that’s not something you are allowed to forget very easily.

King Malcolm III established his base here in the mid-11th century after defeating Macbeth and the town has been the birthplace of seven kings, whose portraits all hang near the entrance to the pub.

Located near the Abbey and across from the regal entrance to Pittencrieff Park, The Seven Kings is at the heart of the ancient capital and perfectly placed to draw in the crowds, which it does.

I’m calling it Pittencrieff Park. But that’s because I’m not a Fifer. Everyone here calls it the glen.

It was decided an early dinner was preferable to venturing outside again in the snow – especially as there was

a good selection of cocktails on offer. One Woo Woo in and I was having great fun spotting all the No7- related memorabilia scattered round the walls.

There’s Happy, Bashful, Doc and the gang. Then there’s Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen and the rest. You know the kind of thing.

The craic in the pub was also good, with an atmosphere surprisingly raucous for a Sunday afternoon with families, blokes watching the footie and a gaggle of girls enjoying a long boozy lunch.

Pub Spy likes steak medium rare and they got it spot-on. With chips, onion rings and peppercorn sauce accompaniment, this wasn’t anything fancy but was perfect pub grub.

The staff were helpful and pol ite. They were quick to refill drinks, take orders and apologised when we were given a dirty spoon. But management owe their female customers an apology for the state of their toilets, which are in serious need of revamp – even toilet roll and a working lock would have been nice.

Overall, the cosy watering hole – which has sport on offer on huge TV screens – scored highly on all other fronts and got my royal seal of approval.
