Soap plot silences Corrie star Sue

-

Soap star Sue Cleaver says filming scenes where she sent her serial killer husband plunging to his death in the sea left her so drained she could not speak.

Sue plays Coronation Street’s Eileen Grimshaw, who finally rumbled evil murderer Pat Phelan.

Af ter scuf f l ing on a storm-lashed harbour wall, he clung on – until Eileen stamped on his hand.

Sue, 54, said : “The storyline has been full- on for the last two years.

“The build-up has been brilliant and it has been a joy to f ilm – but utterly exhausting.

“I collapsed when I got home. I shut the doors and didn’t want to see anybody.

“The next morning, I walked in to the kitchen and my partner was there having normal conversations and asking things.

“I said, ‘Please don’t speak to me. I can’t speak. I can’t form the words and I don’t want to communicate with you or anybody. Why don’t you go to the pub for an hour? In fact, why don’t you go to the pub for 12 hours?’

“I literally had nothing to give.”

It didn’t help that the scene was filmed at 4am in a storm at Whitehaven on the Cumbrian coast.

Some fans have criticised the dark storyline but Sue said: “There is light and shade in Coronation Street – the drama is interspersed with comedy.”
