HIGHLAND LEAGUE ROUND-UP

Formartine United toasted the first Highland League Cup triumph in their history after edging out Fraserburgh 2-1.

Manager Paul Lawson, who picked up a second trophy after winning the Aberdeenshire Shield, said: “To win two trophies in my first season is a proud moment for me, the club and the players.”

Broch took the lead in two minutes when Gary Harris scored from the spot after a foul on Jamie Beagrie.

Two minutes from the break, it was all square when Craig McKeown fired home from eight yards.

Garry Wood’s winner came in 51 minutes when the ex- Caley Thistle and Ross County striker rifled low into the corner.

In the league, Cove moved closer to the title with an amazing 12-2 win away to Fort William.

Paul McManus scored four times while Mitch Megginson, Eric Watson and Jonny Smith all found the net twice.

Daniel Park and Ryan Stott also netted for Cove while Iain Foggo’s penalty and a Watson own goal were all Fort could muster.

Brora Rangers won 3-2 at home to Turriff United with Kyle MacLeod scoring twice and Colin Williamson hitting the winner. Adam Cross and Nikolas Wozniak replied for Turriff.

James McShane’s hat-trick gave Strathspey a 3-2 win over Lossiemouth while Wick’s Gordon McNab and Danny McKay shot down Deveronvale in a 2- 0 win.

LOWLAND LEAGUE ROUND-UP

Derek Ure’s injury- time strike blew the title race wide open as East Stirling twice came from behind to deny Spartans in a 2-2 draw.

Paul Sludden cancelled out Jamie Dishington’s opener before Jason Stevens edged Spartans back in front with three minutes left.

But the away side’s lead at the summit stands at just a point after Ure moved Shire up to third, six points off top.

He said: “A draw feels a fair result. I’m sure Spartans must have thought they’d won it but we never gave up.”

Loanee Fraser Malcolm moved Gala Fairydean seven points clear of trouble with a 1- 0 over Hawick.

Rovers boss Steven Noble said: “Nobody wants to finish second bottom as there’s a chance of two going down.”
