I HAVE HAD THE RHYME OF MY LIFE
Pupil’s joy after VIP tour of Tunnock’s factory
As VIP trips go, Tunnock’s take the biscuit.
The firm welcomed the Sunday Mail Poetry Competition winner for a peek round their famous factory.
Thrilled Ruby Holland, 10, was treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the bakery in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, last week.
And Ruby, of Sanquhar Primary, Dumfriesshire, is still smiling after the 128-year- old family firm pulled out the stops with a special tour to remember.
She said: “It was like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There was a real river of caramel and thousands of teacakes whizzing past on a big conveyor belt.
“The wrapping machines were so fast you couldn’t see them wrap.
“And the staff were really friendly. They were shaking my hand as I toured with my friends. I was a celebrity for the day.”
We challenged kids to write a poem about a day at school on the back of a caramel wafer wrapper or piece of paper.
Primary six pupil Ruby’s verse, Janny’s Secret, was selected by three expert judges from more than 1100 entries.
She imagined school janny Bill Love in a pink afro and roller skates and singing Disney Frozen hit Let It Go.
Her 30- strong class and teacher Ali White joined her for Wednesday’s visit.
And Boyd Tunnock, 85, grandson of the firm’s founder Thomas, greeted them. Sales manager Fergus Loudon said: “We’re delighted it has been such a success.”
