It’s mind the gap for Mart

- Craig Swan

Martin Canning reckons relegation-threatened Accies lacked the belief to kill off the Kilmarnock juggernaut.

The Hamilton boss felt his team played well enough to get something out of their trip to Rugby Park.

But Canning could sense his side didn’t have the mindset to mount a comeback from two down at half-time.

He said: “I didn’t think we showed enough belief to win. It seemed we hoped and that is the disappointing bit.

“It ’ s mindset . Ki l l ie believe they’re going to win every game they play.

“That belief somehow manages to pull you through games and get you results.

“I don’t think there was much between the teams. I don’t think they played any better than we played.

“We had chances in the second half but they got their goals. And 2- 0 was difficult to come back from against a team that believes they are going to win.

“We fought but did we really believe we were going to get back into the game? I don’t think we did. They were on the front foot and believed they could win. I expect better from us, I expected us to come here and believe we could win.”

Accies shipped a fourthminute opener as Lee Erwin turned teen Ronan Hughes before Stephen O’Donnell was awarded the second in first-half injury time.

Canning said: “I felt sorry for young Ronan. Erwin used his experience, rolled him and finished it.

“It was a poor start and the t second goal was a freak. He has just tried to make contact and put it back into the bodies. It rolled into the bottom corner.

“To concede right on halftime t was a sickener. At 1- 0 when we get them back in we think we can get something. But B 2-0 is a lot more difficult.

“In the second half we had two similar scrambles on the goalline. We just didn’t seem s to have the breaks.”
