Left-back’s heart is in right place
Andy Robertson’s not just a force to be reckoned with on the pitch. Away from the game, he has a reputation for reaching out to help those less fortunate than himself.
He refused presents for his 21st birthday at his celebration at Parklands Country Club, near Glasgow.
Instead, the defender asked for donations to the East Renfrewshire Food Bank in nearby Thornliebank, run by the Trussell Trust charity. Family and friends raised more than £500 for hungry families.
At the time, he had just made a big-money move from Dundee United to Hull City in the English Premiership.
He said: “I’m doing OK for myself and I decided I didn’t really need any kind of presents.
“I was trying to think of something special to do and my parents came up with the idea of helping out East Renfrewshire Food Bank.
“It’s not far from where I grew up, they do amazing work and I know they help a lot of people out.”
Since his move to Liverpool in August, he has been seen helping out at a food bank at the St Andrew’s Community Network building near the club’s ground, handing out food donated by fans and former players.
In March, he wrote to thank seven-year-old Alfie Radford for donating pocket money to a food bank collection at Anfield.
He modestly told Alfie that he was sending him a jersey from Brazilian team-mate Roberto Firmino, instead of his own.
He wrote: “Let’s be honest Alfie – no one wants the left-back’s shirt – which is why I got you Bobby’s instead. Hope that’s OK.”
