Man arrested after Steven run over by van on busy street

A dad was killed after being run down by a van in front of his partner early yesterday.

Steven Campbel l, 27, suf fered multiple injuries after being caught under the wheels of a white Ford Transit in a suspected hit-and-run.

The incident happened in Burnhill Street in Rutherglen, near Glasgow, shortly before 2am.

His death was witnessed by longterm partner Robyn McGil l and another man, who is believed to be his cousin. They were uninjured.

Steven was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but later died.

Police sealed off streets and forensic off icers in white suits examined the area for evidence throughout yesterday. Clothing could be seen behind the police cordon.

Detectives also carried out door-todoor inquiries and gathered CCTV footage from local businesses.

Last night, police revealed that a man aged 33 had been detained in connection with the incident.

A spokeswoma­n said: “Inquiries are ongoing and officers continue to appeal for informatio­n, in particular, any informatio­n regarding the white Transit van.”

Detective Inspector Kevin Houliston, from the Major Investigat­ions Team, added: “We are trying to piece together the exact circumstan­ces of what has happened. A young man has lost his life and a family have been left devastated.

“Any small detail could prove vital and I appeal to people with any informatio­n or knowledge of the incident to contact us.”

Floral tributes were left at the scene and local people paid tribute to Steven.

Violet Weldon, 59, said: “I knew Steven well, I knew him all his life. He was friends with my older sons and a nice boy. Steven was always pleasant.

“He has a couple of kids and his mother and family will be devastated.”

Maryann McMillan, 23, added: “Most people knew Steven and liked him. He was a very positive person who seldom had a bad word to say about anybody.”

Father Pat Hennessy, the parish priest of St Columbkill­e’s Church in Rutherglen, added: “This is terrible news for the community.”
