Fraud probe firm left me bankrupt

Ex-Scotland skipper Hendry’s cash woe

- Graeme Donohoe Young Fraser

Ally MacLeod returned empty-handed from Scotland’s ill-fated 1978 World Cup campaign in Argentina but Tartan Army foot soldier Fraser Mackay found the love of his life.

He bumped into Roxana in the Sorocaban cafe in Cordoba – and now, after 31 years of marriage, the couple have returned there to celebrate their first meeting.

Fraser, 72, and Roxana 62, who live in Edinburgh with their two sons, feature in BBC1 documentary Scotland 78: A Love Story on Wednesday.

It tells the story of the infamous World Cup bid when boss MacLeod convinced the nation we were going to win.

Fraser, who owned clothes shops in Edinburgh, wasn’t going to miss out and headed for Cordoba.

He said: “We gathered in a cafe bar called Sorocaban to drink and sing and I noticed Roxana. We attempted to communicate and somehow we managed it. We enjoyed a nice evening.”

While Fraser met his match, it didn’t go well for Scotland on the pitch as we were beaten by Peru, drew with Iran and winger Willie Johnston was sent home

Ex- Scotland captain Colin Hendry has claimed he went bust after taking advice from a high-end financial firm at the centre of a fraud probe.

The former defender invested cash after enlisting the services of Kingsbridge Asset Management.

He was one of a number of footballers, including Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, who hired the London-based financial advisers. Former employees after failing a drugs test. Beating eventual finalists Holland salvaged some pride.

Fraser returned to Cordoba in December 1978 to spend time with Roxana but, when he returned home, they lost touch for six years.

He said: “She visited Europe with her sister and spent time with me. She then went to Spain and a year later she came back for another visit and it was then that we decided to get hitched.”

Fraser reckons MacLeod did his best for Scotland. He added: “I guess he did me a favour as I found a future wife.” Kevin McMenamin, Ian Battersby and Alex Chamberlain have been arrested in connection with conspiracy to commit fraud.

Hendry, 52, said he would look for compensation if investigators proved any wrongdoing.

Ex-Rangers star Hendry said: “I ’ l l want compensation i f anything is proven. I’ve had a massive disservice done to me financially and advice-wise.

“You employ somebody to give you advice financially, then you put all your trust in that person.

“So when you end up bankrupt because of that, then how does that happen?”

Hendry – who will attend the La Reunion France ’ 98 20th anniversary dinner at the Hilton in Glasgow on June 10 – also revealed he has moved in with girlfriend Jill Scott.

He said his relationship with the dental surgery boss helped him draw a line over troubles in his life. The dad of four’s wife Denise died, aged 43, in 2009.

As Hendry’s life spiralled out of control, he was declared bankrupt in 2010 and was convicted of stalking on-off lover Sarah Kinder in August 2015.

He added: “My life is good. I’ve just moved in with Jill. We’ve been with each other a year now. We’re a good couple and we just get on.

“I made mistakes and I’ve been punished for the mistakes. But I’ve moved my life forward.”
