McLaughlin appalled by Wee silence

- Fraser Wilson

Veteran Scott McLaughl in has launched a stinging attack on Albion Rovers, accusing them of “shocking and totally unprofessional” treatment.

The midfielder is a free agent after his deal with the Coatbridge side ended following relegation to League Two.

And the 34-year-old is furious at the silence from Cliftonhill as his career sits in limbo.

He claims he hasn’t heard a word from Albion in the six weeks since the season ended.

And he warned such neglect could trigger depression for some players, claiming loyalty in football has to be a two-way street.

The former Ayr, Airdrie and Morton man took to Twitter to vent his frustration and said the only contact he’s had was from former boss Brian Kerr – who left at the end of the season with John Brogan eventually replacing him in the dugout.

He said: “So that’s six weeks to this day and still not as much as a phone call from anyone at Albion Rovers (apart from ex-manager and assistant).

“I’ve been in football for 18 years and I’ve seen a lot in that time, I find this shocking and totally unprofessional.

“I can deal with this sort of thing but treatment like this for some others might cause a different reaction.

“As we know many footballers suffer from depression and I’m happy to see many people opening up and talking about it and getting the help they need.

“Something like this could be the trigger to set someone off on a downward spiral.

“Foot ball is a cut-throat business but all players want is their club to be up-front and honest about things.

“Clubs and fans always talk about loyalty in football and the lack of it from players, it has to come from both sides. I have absolutely no problem with a club not wanting me but it would be good of the club to pick up the phone to me and tell me their thoughts.”

But a Rovers spokesman responded and said: “Albion Rovers Football Club do not accept the comments made by the player on social and mainstream media .

“As soon as our new manager was appointed the club secretary made contact with all players to invite them to meet and have discussions with the new manager.

“Some players attended, some made different arrangements with John whi le others turned down the invitation and a few failed to respond.”
