EMILY’S MUM I’LL CARRY ON SAFETY FIGHT

- Craig McDonald

The mum of a student abused by her boyfriend on campus has vowed that her campaign to improve safety won’t be derailed.

Law student Emily Drouet, 18, took her own life after she was verbally and physically attacked by Angus Milligan.

He was expelled from Aberdeen University after being convicted of assaulting Emily at their halls of residence.

But last week we told how he enrolled within weeks for a new course at prestigious Oxford Brookes University.

Fiona, who’s campaigned to improve student safety, said his re- emergence has only strengthened her bid to force change.

The 46- year- old, from Glasgow, said: “The news he is back at university was disappointing and causes concern. But it raises another issue and will serve to drive our campaign forward.

“We’ve achieved a lot so far in terms of training in gender- based violence being rolled out at Scottish institutions. We’re about to launch a support card with information for university and college staff.

“This latest issue shows more consideration needs to be given to pol icies surrounding acceptance of students who have been removed from institutions.

“I hope the news does not inhibit any other young girls from coming forward if they experience abuse. In fact, it should encourage them. I want people to be reassured that help is available.”

Oxford Brookes University said they carry out risk assessments on applicants before they are enrolled.
