Rocker Kyle and Sunday Mail team up with TRNSMT ice cream freebies

- Ashlie McAnally

Rocker Kyle Falconer yesterday made sure TRNSMT revellers didn’t wilt in the soaring temperatures – with a scoop of help from the Sunday Mail.

We teamed up with The View singer to hand out free ice cream to music fans at Scotland’s biggest festival.

The mercury hit 25C but our van was on hand to help everyone who headed to Glasgow Green to keep their cool.

Kyle, 31, who doled out icy treats to excited fans, was delighted to be part of the event again, this year as a solo artist.

He popped up at the window of the van as dozens of shocked festival-goers flocked for a freebie and a selfie.

The singer played on the King Tut’s stage yesterday to a sold- out crowd and belted out tracks from his new album No Thank You.

The View played at the festival ’s debut last year on the final day when the weather wasn’t so nice.

Kyle said: “This is a great day for it.

“The response to the ice cream van was fantastic. It was a good laugh.

“Everyone seemed to appreciate getting a chance to cool down with some ice cream. It was exactly what was needed.

“It’s my first festival this year – it’s been a busy year with the album.

“I’ll be playing new stuff and old View songs that we never really got the chance to play.

“The weather wasn’t as nice last year but this has been the best summer I can remember.

“It’s great being in the sun with my flip-flops on, feeling free.

“It was class playing at the f irst TRNSMT and it was a massive crowd for us. Glasgow is always really good to us.

“This year, it feels like a good achievement playing on my own because it’s a new thing. Even though The View have played Glasgow loads, it feels good to be doing it on my own.”

Revellers went wild when they realised Kyle was handing out the free treats at the festival’s west entrance.

Allan McFarlane, 30, of Kilmarnock, said: “It’s Kyle from The View – great guy. He’s my God.”

Courteney Milne, 18, of Cumbernauld, added: “It’s amazing, I’m shocked. I thought they were lying when I heard.”

Just ine Davidson, 17, a lso of Cumbernauld, said: “He’s so hot – I want to have his babies.” Emma Railley,

35, of Glasgow’s Anniesland, said: “It was great to see Kyle on the ice cream van. He pulled in the crowds.”

Yesterday was the second of five TRNSMT days spl it across this weekend and next.

It was a sell- out crowd as the festival was kicked off by The LaFontaines.

By the afternoon, 50,000 people had arrived to watch Liam Gallagher perform on the main stage.

There were also performances from Gerry Cinnamon, Wolf Alice and Courteeners.

Pol ice Scotland said they had arrested eight people since the festival started on Friday.

Officers also “deterred” 34 people from entering the site with illegal drugs.

Superintendent David Pettigrew said: “Fans have been in great spirits and have come here to enjoy the music with their friends, giving us no cause for concern.

“We’ve arrested eight people for minor

disorder offences since opening on Friday and, because of positive police searches and onsite partnership working with event organisers, we’ve detected and deterred 34 people from entering the site with drugs.

“Our message continues to be – know what you can and cannot bring onsite.

“Drugs are illegal and you will be arrested if we f ind them in your possession. Don’t take the risk.”

With the soaring temperatures, people have been advised to be safe and responsible in the sun.

Free water fountains were provided for people to combat the heat.

Organisers said fans had adhered to advice on how to cope with the hot weather. They had issued a plea for revellers to drink plenty of water and top-up on sun cream.

Alan McWilliam, onsite medical manager, said: “It’s been a real ly good-natured festival so far and the

majority of people we’re seeing is due to the weather or pre- existing conditions.”

He added: “If you’re drinking alcohol, please do so responsibly – pace yourself and make sure you also eat and stay hydrated.”

Rocker Gallagher wasn’t quite in tune with the health and safety advice, though. Instead, he praised a fan for starting an early-morning booze session during his train journey to Glasgow.

The festival-goer – also named Liam – posted an image of himself with his carry-out on Twitter at 7.32am after the star asked what the weather was like in the city. The ex- Oasis star replied: “Hardcore.” Festival director Geoff Ellis was thrilled with the atmosphere generated by the fans and performers.

He said: “This has been a brilliant event so far. Friday set the scene with some outstanding performances

and today’s atmosphere is already ady electric. Fans have been enjoying the sunshine and today’s line-up is – in the words of Gerry Cinnamon – a belter. r.

“There’s a lso been excel lent ent par tnership work ing between een organisers and Police Scotland to make sure the gate searches are strong and there’s zero tolerance nce towards anyone trying to enter ter with illegal or prohibited items.”

Meanwhile, yesterday was also the he opening day of the first Fiesta x FOLD, D, a new weekend festival held in n Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park.

Nile Rodgers and Chic were e joined by De La Soul, The Pointer r Sisters and Earth Wind And Fire.

Allan Gow tweeted: “Fiesta x FOLD D absolutely jumping. Awesome in n hot sun.”
