Arnie and wife are still not divorced – seven years on
Film star Arnold Schwarzenegger still hasn’t terminated his marriage – seven years after Maria Shriver filed for divorce, it emerged yesterday.
Maria demanded a formal split on July 1, 2011, after she learned the Kindergarten Cop actor had fathered a child with their housekeeper.
The couple, who have four children, agreed joint custody of their sons Patrick and Christopher but they still haven’t f inal ised thei r divorce, showbusiness website TMZ reported last night.
In terms of a property settlement, it was reported at the time there was a pot of about $ 400million to split.
The couple started dating in 1982 and married in 1986, and did not have a prenup.
Sources connected to Arnold and Maria say there were bumps along the way in hammering out a settlement but, since the split is 50/50 under Cal ifornia law, no delays were expected.
However, neither party seems keen to push the divorce through.
Both Arnie, 70, and Maria, 62, are believed to have dated other people since their separation but sources close to the couple say there is a real possibility the divorce won’t happen at all, even though they are not getting back together.
Maria is the niece of former US president John F Kennedy and her father i s 1972 Democratic vice-presidential candidate Sargent Shriver.
A power ful f igure in the world of broadcast journalism, she hosted news shows on the CBS and NBC networks while Arnie’s career took off.
An immigrant from Graz, Austria, he moved from the world of bodybuilding to become one of the world’s best paid film stars.
Lead roles in Conan the Barbarian, The Terminator, Twins, True Lies and Jingle All the Way made him hugely popular.
With Maria at his side, he began two terms as the Republican governor of California in 2003.
The relationship was rocked after he left office in 2011, when it was revealed that Arnie had fathered a son, Joseph, with Patty Baena 14 years earlier.
Today, student Joseph, 20, looks more like his muscular dad than any of the children Arnie had with Maria.
