The plan thrashed out with the Cabinet will keep the UK closely tied to Brussels.

The Prime Minister said it was aimed at making sure “we deliver on Brexit for the people because I won’t let people down”.

She insisted that the UK would regain control of its borders but refused to rule out giving EU citizens preferential treatment under future immigration policy.

The Prime Minister’s inner circle are trying to secure support for the proposals to create a new UK-EU free trade area for goods, with a “common rulebook”.

Cabinet Brexiteers have already been persuaded to support the plans after the marathon session of talks on Friday.

Ful l detai ls wi l l be published in a White Paper on Thursday, with Brussels expect ing a round of negotiations in the week commencing July 16.

Nicola Sturgeon said it is “game on” for campaigners hoping to keep the UK in the single market and customs union after Brexit.

The First Minister, who has called for the UK to remain part of the European customs union and single market, said the plan had “more realism in it than we’ve seen before from the UK Government” but added: “That’s not saying much.”
