People are starting to feel sorry for May. Well, me too
of their convictions. It would have required honesty and integrity as well as an alternative plan worthy of the paper it was written on. These men appear to have none of these.
Dithering, inept and accident- prone she may be but Theresa finally managed to stand her ground against them. Not before time. Plus, if we’re to understand correctly the outline of her soft-as-French-butter Brexit deal, it seems to proceed along the path of minimum change: Retaining access to the single market, a “common rulebook” with the EU for all goods and a fudge that pushes away the prospect of a hard Irish border.
Us Remainers don’t want any of it but it’s better than the doorsslammed- two- f ingered- salute version Bojo and his ilk would have.
Would- be PM and Brexiteer posterboy Jacob Rees-Mogg is said to be furious. Frankly, that’s reason enough to convince us it must be a fairly reasonable blueprint.
As for Trump’s malevolent intervention, make no mistake, this is world- class bullying. The visiting POTUS tells us he gave May his advice and she chose the opposite way. Gosh, there she goes again, rising in my estimation.
Witnessing May’s struggle for survival still feels a bit like watching one of those David Attenborough programmes, where a poor, lumbering wildebeest is trapped in a gully by slavering hyenas.
The end may be inevitable for the clumsy, uncuddly creature but we still find ourselves hoping she’ll outsmart the hyenas. No one wants hyenas to win. They’d tear each other to bits to get at the spoils.
So maybe we can allow Theresa her moment gazing skywards laughing at fate because, for once, she may have done something right.
