With whisky galore and great grub, this bar is far from run of the Mill

-

The small town of Stewarton in east Ayrshire is easy to miss, unless you have a reason for being there.

The extension of the M77 in the late 90s meant the town has been bypassed in recent times.

But in the 1800s, it was the dest ination of choice for graverobbers, who would lurk at the gates of the local cemetery waiting for bodies of the recently dead to dig up.

The Resurrection Men who would come to the town would find Robert Burns’s uncle, also Robert, standing guard at the gates.

But rather than follow in his footsteps, take a quick walk to The Mill House, a traditional bar that’s been given a modern twist. With eight beers on draught, including Barcelona lager Estrella, and a good selection of craft beers, there is also the choice of 35 whiskies, 13 rums and five types of tequila.

From the moment we walked into the bar late on a Monday afternoon and then through to the restaurant, we were made to feel very welcome.

It did help that we were the only ones there. But the restaurant quickly filled up as teat ime neared. Pub Spy couldn’t resist the huge house platter for two, which included hagg i s f r it ters , chicken tempura, chicken liver paté, black pudding bon bons and the delicious sweet chilli and coriander king prawns.

It was so filling, I barely had room left for the fish and chips in beer batter and the tasty pineapple crumble sweet. The Mill House, which is on the main road into Stewarton, has ample parking and there is also a beer garden.

Both the bar and restaurant were spotless. It’s well worth the trip to Stewarton. And not a body snatcher in sight.
