Family in bid to keep case open

A newlywed who fell to her death from a balcony in Benidorm could not have jumped and may have been trying to climb to a room below, according to new claims.

Kirsty Maxwell fel l more than 100 feet from a room occupied by five British men while on a hen weekend with friends in the popular holiday spot last year.

Following a dramatic reconstruction, which will air this week, experts said the 27-year-old was facing into the hotel room and clinging on for her life.

The shocking details contradict statements given by suspects in the case, who claimed she jumped from the 10th-floor room.

There are just 10 feet between the 10th floor from which Kirsty fell and the next balcony down, the ninth floor, occupied by Kirsty and her friends.

Kirsty’s dad Brian Curry said the family don’t believe the version of events the men, who were originally treated as suspects, have told police.

He said: “We are of the opinion that it was very difficult to jump and we believe there were other factors.

“The investigation wasn’t up to scratch and we need to get to the bottom of what happened. We are Kirsty’s voice. We are doing this for her.”

Kirsty was on a hen weekend and is believed to have been looking for her friends when she entered a room used by Joseph Graham, Ricky Gammon, Anthony Holehouse, Callum Northridge and Daniel Bailey – all from the Nottingham area.

Spanish police believe Kirsty, who married husband Adam in 2016, may have mistaken the apartment for a friend’s f lat and become disorientated.

She fell from the balcony of room 10E at Apartamentos Payma in the early hours of the morning of April 29. In the forthcoming programme, Killed Abroad, retired detective David Swindle asks if some of the accused men could have intervened to save Lloyd’s TSB worker Kirsty’s life in the time it took for her to climb over the balcony. In a reconstruction of the balcony from room 10E, three women of similar height and weight as Kirsty and wearing the same clothes try to jump on to the makeshift frame. Swindle concludes: “She could not have jumped directly over that balcony. It seems far more likely she clambered over. But what happened next? It makes me wonder – has Kirsty been climbing? Was she trying to get to the rooms below?

“It wasn’t very quick. What were they (the suspects) doing when this was going on. We saw how difficult it is to do what was said that Kirsty did.”

Swindle added that everyone in the apartment was aware Kirsty was in the room and was upset.

He said: “There was plenty of time for someone to intervene and save Kirsty’s life.

“All of this evidence was available to police over a year ago and it appears Kirsty was facing back into the room before she fell. Was she climbing down before she somehow lost her grip? These are questions I’ll try to answer in the coming months.”

The programme also features fall expert Michael Brown, who reviews police photos to try to piece together
