Miller’s memorial match to go ahead

-

A memorial match to ex- Celtic footballer Liam Miller has been given the go ahead.

Midfielder Miller – who also played for Manchester United and the Republic of Ireland – died from cancer in February, aged 36.

Ireland’s Gaelic Athletic Association had initially r e f u s e d or g a n i s e r s permission to hold the fundraising game at Cork’s Pairc Ui Chaoimh because their rules did not allow non- GAA sports at their venues.

The association faced widespread criticism from across the political and sporting worlds for vetoing the September 25 fixture.

The match is to raise cash for Liam’s family and charity but had been rescheduled for a smaller venue.

Pairc Ui Chaoimh’s 45,000 capacity will increase the funds raised by an estimated £1.78million.

Yesterday, the GAA’s central council tweeted: “The Liam Miller tribute match will take place at Pai rc Ui Chaoimh on Tuesday, September 25.”

The char it y footbal l mat ch i s between a Manchester United legends team and a combined Celtic/Ireland side.

Ireland’s Sport Minister, Shane Ross, said: “I am delighted that a practical solution has been found.

“With this charity event now ta k ing place in September, thousands of additional sports supporters will have an opportunity to experience the magnificent venue.”
