Cadden and hell

Well face injury nightmare

-

Motherwell scraped into the last 16 by the skin of their teeth for the second year on the bounce – but boss Stephen Robinson admits they may have paid a high price.

Two goals in three minutes from Curtis Main and Danny Johnson as the clock ticked down towards a shock exit for last season’s finalists wiped out David Goodwillie’s f irst- half opener for Clyde.

And Connor Sammon’s injurytime third put an unfair veneer on a barely-deserved win.

But it came at a cost with Chris Cadden now a doubt for the start of the league season with a hip problem and Carl McHugh hobbling off.

Robinson said: “We had to do the same last season against Edinburgh City to qualify and scored in the last minute.

“We looked rusty at times . Our quality in the final third wasn’t good enough and we never hit the target with our finishing.

“But they showed character in difficult conditions and it was mission accomplished.

“Carl got a bad dead leg and had to come off but Chris is more of a concern with what looks like a hip flexor. We’d made our three subs and he had to hobble through the last 10 minutes so he’s a concern.”

The League Two side more than deserved their half-time lead with only Elliott Frear showing any creativity for Wel l in a onedimensional attacking display.

The goal came in 32 minutes when Goodwi l lie left Peter Hartley and Cedric Kipre for dead as he cut inside and finished across Trevor Carson for his third in four group games.

They held their lead until 14 minutes from time.

Keeper Kieran Hughes was unlucky to see a brilliant fingertip on to the bar fall straight to Main and he headed home.

And sub Johnson made it 2-1 with his first for the club three minutes later, finishing off great play from Cadden and Frear.

In added time, Frear teed up Sammon to nod the third.

Clyde boss Danny Lennon said: “We’re disappointed. Their first shouldn’t have been corner, the second we hit the self- destruct button and the last one I felt Sammon should have been blown for a foul in the build-up.”
